AI Certification for Healthcare Organizations

Your AI is already live. The proof that it’s governed isn’t. We close that gap with whichever path fits, HITRUST AI Security Assessment or ISO/IEC 42001.

The Problem

Healthcare organizations are deploying AI into clinical and operational workflows faster than governance can keep up. Certification gives you independently recognized confirmation that your AI is managed responsibly. Meditology guides you to HITRUST AI Security Assessment, ISO/IEC 42001 (the international standard for an AI Management System), or both.

The adoption pace creates real exposure. Boards and audit committees are asking how AI is governed. Partners and customers want proof before they let your AI touch their data or their patients. Regulators are building expectations through the EU AI Act, and emerging federal and state AI rules.

Most healthcare teams face this reality with lean security and compliance staff who already carry HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC 2, and other obligations. AI adds a new category of risk on top of that workload: impacts on patients, model and data governance, transparency, and lifecycle oversight.

Certification answers that gap. It gives you a defined set of AI controls to implement and an independent, recognized credential that demonstrates your AI is governed and secure.

Our Approach

Meditology offers two certification paths. We help you choose one, both, or a phased sequence based on your compliance posture, AI maturity, and goals.

Path 1: HITRUST AI Security Assessment & Certification (end-to-end)

Meditology is a certified HITRUST External Assessor and delivers this path end to end. The work draws on the HITRUST Common Security Framework (HITRUST CSF), expanded for AI Security, available as ai1 (paired with an e1 or i1 assessment) or ai2 (paired with r2), and the HITRUST validated assessment methodology.

  • Readiness and gap analysis: Scoping, current-state evaluation against HITRUST AI requirements, and a prioritized remediation roadmap.
  • Control implementation: Guidance to design, document, and help implement the policies and technical controls needed to meet HITRUST AI standards.
  • Validated assessment and certification: The formal HITRUST validated assessment through the full certification process, at the ai1 or ai2 level.
  • Ongoing advisory: Sustainable practices for recertification cycles and evolving HITRUST requirements

Path 2: ISO/IEC 42001 Certification (AI Management System)

For ISO/IEC 42001 (the international standard for an AI Management System, covering risk management, ethics, data governance, and the AI lifecycle), Meditology handles all readiness and preparation. An accredited certification body performs the formal audit, which keeps your advisor and your certifier separate.

  • AIMS design: Build an AI Management System (AIMS) aligned to ISO/IEC 42001 and integrated with your existing GRC infrastructure. It complements ISO 27001 and other ISO management systems.
  • Risk and impact analysis: AI-focused risk assessment covering impacts on patients, operations, and data subjects, plus risk treatment.
  • Documentation development: Policies, procedures, and records tailored to ISO/IEC 42001 and your environment, not generic templates.
  • Audit preparation and coordination: Internal audit readiness, personnel training, and full coordination with the accredited certification body.

Outcomes

Concrete outcomes, depending on the path you choose.

Why Meditology

Two credible paths exist for certifying healthcare AI, and most firms sell one. HITRUST AI Security Assessment builds on the CSF your organization may already hold. ISO/IEC 42001 certifies your AI management system through an accredited certification body.

Meditology works in both. As a certified HITRUST External Assessor, we can take you through HITRUST AI on the same control foundation as your existing certification. For ISO/IEC 42001 we prepare you and stay engaged through an accredited body’s audit.

The advantage of running both through a healthcare-only firm is evidence reuse: your HITRUST, SOC 2, and HIPAA control work is already mapped, so AI certification extends what you have rather than starting over.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we pursue both certifications?

Yes, and many organizations hold both. HITRUST AI Security Assessment gives deep U.S. healthcare assurance on AI security controls. ISO/IEC 42001 gives broader, internationally recognized governance. Meditology can plan an integrated approach that reduces duplication across the two.

Meditology handles all readiness and preparation. An accredited certification body performs the formal audit. This preserves independence while Meditology stays your advisor through the process.

A few months for organizations with an existing HITRUST or ISO 27001 program. Six to twelve months on a phased approach for organizations earlier in the AI governance journey. The main drivers are organizational maturity and scope.

No. Both engagements include foundational policy work, risk assessment, and control implementation. Meditology can build the program and prepare you for certification at the same time.

It strengthens your posture rather than replacing HIPAA. Many AI controls align with HIPAA data-protection, risk-management, and transparency expectations.

Yes. An AI certification gives partners independently verified evidence of your AI governance and security. The frameworks also help your teams when evaluating third-party AI tools.

Meditology assesses your compliance posture, AI maturity, and goals, then recommends one certification, both, or a phased path.
